CNN reports it is the first time the tournament has been held across three countries simultaneously, and every one of them is currently dealing with a measles surge ahead of kickoff on June 11. Mexico is in the worst position. Jalisco, home to host city Guadalajara, alone accounts for over 4,000 cases. The country is in the middle of what officials describe as its worst measles outbreak in modern history. Canada lost its measles elimination status in November 2025 after more than 5,400 cases - its biggest outbreak in decades. The US had a record year in 2025 and is on track to nearly double those numbers in 2026. The 2026 World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19 across 16 cities in the US, Mexico, and Canada, with 48 teams in the largest edition ever.
