As of July 9, the CDC has confirmed at least 843 domestically acquired cases across 31 states, with more than 1,500 additional reports still under analysis to determine whether they were also acquired inside the country. Michigan is among the hardest-hit states. Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that spreads through food or water contaminated with feces. It causes prolonged, watery diarrhea, fatigue and cramping that can last weeks without treatment. Sick people in this outbreak range in age from 5 to 88, with a median age of 44, and 18 have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. What makes this outbreak difficult is the missing link. In past US cyclospora outbreaks the parasite was traced to fresh produce such as herbs, berries and salad greens, but investigators have not yet named the specific product this time. Until they do, potentially contaminated food may remain in circulation, and consumers have no clear item to avoid. Washing produce reduces but does not eliminate the risk.
