Ukraine's overnight strikes on Russian energy infrastructure blacked out occupied Crimea

Ukraine's Defense Forces struck three Russian energy targets within hours overnight into August 20, 2026: the Taneco oil refinery in Tatarstan, which the General Staff says can process up to 16 million tons of crude oil a year; the Tamanneftegaz oil terminal in Krasnodar Krai, one of the largest oil terminals on the Black Sea; and the 500-kilovolt Taman substation, through which all four power lines feeding occupied Crimea run. Fires were reported at all three sites. Power failed in Simferopol, Sevastopol, Kerch, Feodosia, and Yalta, with Sevastopol's occupation authorities saying restrictions were lifted after about 90 minutes, though the grid remained unstable.
