Britain is rewiring its armed forces around cheap, expendable drones, and the price tag is now official. Under its new Defence Investment Plan, the UK government will spend more than 5 billion pounds over the next four years on uncrewed systems, the largest drone commitment in the country's military history, according to gov.uk. The money reaches every service. Project NYX will put up to 24 autonomous armed drones into the field by 2030, flying alongside the Army's upgraded Apache helicopters to carry out reconnaissance, precision strikes and electronic warfare. The Royal Navy is moving toward what it calls a Hybrid Navy, pairing crewed warships with uncrewed missile platforms and extra-large underwater vehicles built to hunt submarines. The Royal Air Force is developing autonomous drone wingmen to fly beside its Typhoon fighters, and the Army is adding a 50 million pound boost for expendable loitering munitions over the coming year. The shift responds directly to the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, where cheap autonomous systems have repeatedly destroyed armour and aircraft worth many times their cost.
