Swedish study: completing at-home colorectal cancer test linked to 43% lower death risk
A new study from Karolinska Institutet and Umea University found that people who actually complete Sweden's at-home colorectal cancer screening test had up to a 43 percent lower risk of dying from the disease. The findings, based on up to 14 years of follow-up data from more than 376,000 people, were published this week in JAMA Network Open.
A new study from Karolinska Institutet and Umea University, published in JAMA Network Open, followed more than 376,000 people for up to 14 years using data from Sweden's Stockholm-Gotland colorectal cancer screening programme. Simply being invited to screening was tied to a 26 percent lower risk of dying from the disease, while actually completing the at-home stool sample test raised that reduction to 43 percent. Around one in three eligible people never submit a sample, even though the test is free and done at home. The study was led by Johannes Blom.
