South Korea's Foreign Ministry confirmed on July 21 that hackers had secret access to a server at the National Diplomatic Academy, the institution that trains the country's diplomats, from around April 2025 until February 2026, nearly ten months. South Korea's National Intelligence Service detected the intrusion in February 2026, but the breach was not disclosed publicly until five months later. Compromised data reportedly includes trainees' ID, name, email and encrypted password. Dong-A Ilbo reports about 6,000 current and former diplomats and officials seconded from other ministries may be affected, while other estimates put the number closer to 10,000. Investigators are examining whether a North Korea-linked hacking group was involved but say there isn't yet enough technical evidence to confirm attribution.
