Sequoia Capital commits about 10 billion dollars to OpenAI Anthropic and xAI simultaneously, largest bet in firm history

Sequoia Capital has committed roughly $10 billion to AI, the largest single investment in the venture firm's 54-year history, according to Bloomberg's reporting on August 5. Co-stewards Alfred Lin and Pat Grady, who took over from Roelof Botha in November 2025, are now backing OpenAI, Anthropic and Elon Musk's xAI simultaneously. That breaks a rule Sequoia set for itself in 2020, when it forfeited a $21 million stake in payments startup Finix rather than hold a position that conflicted with portfolio company Stripe. Sequoia joined Anthropic's funding round in January 2026 at a $350 billion valuation, then co-led its Series H in May at $965 billion. Part of the new capital is also going toward what the firm calls reindustrialization: nuclear power, robotics and manufacturing, including a $1 billion round for nuclear startup Valar Atomics. The move follows a $7 billion fund the firm closed in April. OpenAI and Anthropic together took in an estimated 43 percent of all global venture capital in the first half of 2026, according to Crunchbase, a concentration that is squeezing funding for smaller, non-AI startups.
