A medicine best known for weight loss has produced its first controlled result in human aging research. In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 108 adults living with HIV-associated lipohypertrophy, semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy made by Novo Nordisk $NVO, slowed the accumulation of epigenetic aging markers over 32 weeks compared with placebo, according to a study published in Nature Communications by researchers at the University of California, San Diego and partner institutions. The context matters. This is a single finding in one specific patient population, not evidence that the drug slows aging in the general public. Epigenetic aging markers are laboratory measures, and a change in those markers is not the same as a proven change in lifespan or long-term health.
