A vaccine built to stop fentanyl before it reaches the brain has shown its first strong animal results. Scripps Research reports that vaccinated mice exposed to fentanyl doses high enough to cause profound respiratory depression instead kept near-normal breathing, with roughly 70% less of the drug crossing into the brain compared with unvaccinated animals. The findings were published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. What sets this approach apart from earlier opioid vaccines is its breadth. Rather than training the immune system against a single molecule, the design teaches it to recognize a wider class of fentanyl-related compounds, including some of the more dangerous designer variants that circulate on illicit markets.
