Scientists overturn a textbook idea: it is not just royal jelly that makes a queen bee
New research in Nature finds the wax nursery is as important as diet in making a honeybee queen. Worker bees build special peanut-shaped chambers from custom wax that holds heat and moisture, and larvae raised in ordinary wax died more often even on the same diet.
For generations the textbook story was simple: feed a honeybee larva enough royal jelly and a queen emerges. New research published in Nature, with researchers at the University of California, Riverside, shows the queen's wax chamber is a carefully engineered environment, not just a shelter. These peanut-shaped queen cells are built from wax that is less dense, more pliable, and better at holding warmth and moisture. The team identified a previously unknown class of young worker bees they call queen cell builders, which gather, modify and enrich the wax and run warmer bodies while tending the future queen. That extra heat speeds development: queens mature in about 16 days versus roughly 21 for workers. When queen larvae were raised in ordinary worker wax, more died and survivors were smaller, even on the same diet. The same pattern appeared in both Asian and European honeybees.
