An experimental oral drug from Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University, published in Cell, activates skeletal-muscle metabolism instead of suppressing appetite. Built on an engineered beta-2 agonist, it aims to avoid the appetite loss, muscle wasting and digestive issues linked to GLP-1 drugs. A Phase 1 trial of 48 healthy volunteers and 25 people with type 2 diabetes reported good tolerability. A larger Phase 2 trial is planned, led by Atrogi.
