Russia struck Kyiv overnight into Thursday, August 20, with a combined ballistic missile, Kalibr cruise missile and jet-powered drone attack. Ukraine's air force tracked the missiles approaching from the north before cruise missiles followed from the south and drones moved in from the Chernihiv and Poltava regions. Kyiv's city military administration recorded damage at more than a dozen locations across the Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts, saying five people were killed and 23 injured, a toll that rose after the mayor's earlier count of three dead. Residential buildings, a children's hospital and a school were damaged; residents were trapped inside one apartment building and people were trapped inside a school shelter as emergency crews worked through the night. Warehouse fires broke out and parts of two districts lost power.
