Russia launched one of its largest missile and drone barrages on Kyiv in months overnight into August 5, and Ukrainian air defenses failed to intercept a single one of the 24 ballistic missiles involved, according to CNN. The attack also included missiles identified as hypersonic Zircons or supersonic Oniks, plus 115 drones, many of them jet-powered, per NPR. At least 17 people were killed and 44 injured. The strikes did not hit military infrastructure. They struck warehouses belonging to civilian retail and logistics companies, including the NOVUS supermarket chain in the Borshchahivka district, along with Epicentr, Rozetka, Nova Poshta and Fozzy Group, plus a railway station, according to NPR, CNN and Ukrainian outlet RBC-Ukraine. The zero-interception result on ballistic missiles stands out on its own. Ukraine's Patriot-class air defenses are a limited and expensive resource, and a barrage of this size getting through cleanly suggests those stocks are being outpaced by the volume and mix of incoming Russian weapons, not simply overwhelmed on one bad night.
