Cameras fitted to Royal Navy surveillance drones used by the UK's special forces, including the Special Boat Service, were secretly sending signals to an address in China. The Kraken K3 Scout uncrewed surface vessels are 8.4-metre unmanned speedboats, part of a fleet the Royal Marines have used since March for surveillance along contested coastlines. Their electro-optical and infrared cameras were built by a Canadian manufacturer but contained components sourced from outside the UK. Those components sent routine "heartbeat" signals, confirming the device was powered on and connected, to a device located in China. The Royal Navy has now cut all internet connectivity from the cameras. An investigation found no evidence that MoD data or systems were accessed, compromised, or transmitted externally. The case still shows how a single unvetted component, buried deep in a defense supply chain, can create a covert communication link that nobody authorized or even knew existed.
