Germany's armed forces are getting a sovereign satellite communications network. Rheinmetall $RHM and OHB have finalized their joint venture to pursue the Bundeswehr's proliferated low Earth orbit communications satellite program, as reported by Aviation Week. Inside the venture, OHB is responsible for the space segment and the associated ground segment. Rheinmetall Digital, a Rheinmetall subsidiary, covers the user and network segments, including end-user terminals. Germany's antitrust authority, the Bundeskartellamt, approved the creation of the joint venture on April 16. The German government committed 35 billion euros in September 2025 for space-related defence projects through 2030, including new satellite constellations for early warning, reconnaissance and communications.
