Nvidia $NVDA is changing how it makes money from the AI boom. In a partnership with Australian startup Firmus and Singapore's DayOne, it will help build a 360MW AI data center in Batam, Indonesia, that is set to use up to 170,000 of its accelerators across the Grace Blackwell, Vera Rubin and Vera platforms during 2027 and 2028. The unusual part is the structure: rather than simply selling the chips, Nvidia will provide credit support for the project and earn a share of the cloud revenue it generates. Firmus projects between and in committed customer revenue over the first six years, and the campus is scheduled to go live in early 2027. The arrangement ties Nvidia's earnings to how heavily the capacity is actually used, deepening its stake in the cloud businesses built on its hardware rather than ending at the point of sale. It also extends the AI buildout into Southeast Asia, where power and land are more available than in saturated US and European markets.
