Nvidia is extending its reach from data-center GPUs into the cameras that watch factory floors, warehouses and store aisles. Verkada, a 10-year-old maker of security cameras and software, said Wednesday that Nvidia $NVDA is investing an unspecified amount at a $5.8 billion valuation. Nvidia joins as a new backer following a strategic investment from Alphabet's $GOOGL CapitalG late last year. The money comes with a technology partnership. Verkada is using Nvidia's Cosmos world foundation models and its Physical AI Data Factory to improve how its systems understand video. The company says the collaboration has lifted the mean average precision of its AI-powered search by 68% for spatial-temporal understanding, which in practice means faster and more accurate results when users search footage for specific events. The direction of the product is what makes the deal notable. Verkada points to uses such as identifying health and safety incidents on manufacturing floors and detecting retail shrinkage, and it is building a multi-model search agent architecture with reasoning models for more complex situations. That places physical security squarely inside the "physical AI" push Nvidia has been promoting, and it gives Nvidia a stake in a customer whose cameras generate exactly the kind of real-world video data those models are trained to interpret.
