Nvidia $NVDA has agreed to invest about $5 billion in Safe Superintelligence, the secretive AI lab founded in 2024 by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. The investment is part of a long-term strategic partnership that gives SSI access to Nvidia's Vera Rubin computing systems, which the companies say will increase the startup's available compute capacity by a factor of ten over the next 12 months. SSI had already raised more than $3 billion from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, DST Global, Greenoaks Capital and Sequoia Capital at a $32 billion valuation; with Nvidia's stake, its total funding now reaches $7 billion. Unlike most well-funded AI labs, SSI has released no product and published no research details since launch, betting instead on a research direction Sutskever has described as focused on overlooked aspects of how the human brain functions.
