Anyone heading to a summer camp, cruise, or crowded restaurant should know that norovirus is spreading well out of its normal season across the United States. Surveillance data shows elevated activity in at least 12 states, with Utah, Texas, Ohio, and North Carolina reporting the highest case counts. In Massachusetts, health officials have warned of outbreaks tied to Boston-area summer camps and restaurants. On the water the picture is just as active: by June, four separate gastrointestinal illness events on cruise ships had already crossed the mandatory federal notification threshold the CDC uses to track outbreaks for the year. The virus spreads easily through contaminated food, shared surfaces, and close contact, exactly the conditions created by camps, buffets, and packed dining rooms. One point often misunderstood: alcohol-based hand sanitizer does not reliably kill norovirus. Thorough handwashing with soap and water remains the more effective defense. The CDC tracks the spread partly through its National Wastewater Surveillance System, which monitors more than 1,200 sites covering roughly 45 percent of the US population.
