New Zealand has become the latest member of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance to commit its armed forces to Project Arcadia, a US-led effort to build a shared digital backbone for AI-enabled military operations. The other members, the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, are already bound to the same framework. Arcadia is designed to link all five nations into a single common operating picture, pulling command-and-control data and large volumes of battlefield information into one shared view delivered to allied forces simultaneously. Rather than replacing each country's existing military software, planners built Arcadia as a data exchange layer that sits on top of national systems. That was a deliberate choice: several members have domestic acquisition rules and security constraints that slow how quickly they can update or replace core platforms, so a shared layer lets the alliance move faster than any single procurement cycle. For New Zealand, the smallest of the Five Eyes militaries, the upgrade improves the systems its Defence Force uses to communicate with partners and share information more securely. It was funded through the digital modernisation strand of the country's 2025-28 Defence Capability Plan. The practical effect is deeper integration of a small national force into allied, AI-driven decision-making. The next Arcadia planning meeting is scheduled for November in Sydney.
