Nepal-Tibet glacier collapse: flood death toll tops 1,000, thousands still missing

As of September 1, Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority had recorded 987 dead in Nepal; China's Xinhua News Agency reported 16 more dead in Tibet, putting the combined toll at 1,003. Nearly 4,000 people remained missing in Nepal, including 583 foreign nationals (64 of them American, per Nepal's tourism department). The U.S. Geological Survey said the seismic signal came from the glacier collapse itself, registering 5.2 in magnitude, not from an earthquake.
