Natural white hydrogen discovered flowing from billion-year-old Canadian Shield rocks (PNAS, May 2026)

Geochemists at the Universities of Toronto and Ottawa measured natural hydrogen flowing on its own from billion-year-old Canadian Shield rocks at a mine near Timmins, Ontario. A single borehole releases roughly eight kilograms per year, and across 15,000 boreholes the site discharges 140 metric tons annually. Published in PNAS.
