The two planets found here before showed up as bright points of light. Beta Pictoris d, roughly 100 times dimmer than its neighbor Beta Pictoris b, was too faint for that. Instead the team identified it by the chemical fingerprint of its atmosphere, detecting water vapor, methane and carbon monoxide through moderate-resolution spectroscopy. It is the first directly imaged planet found primarily this way rather than by its glow. The planet itself is about 2.4 times the mass of Jupiter and takes 91 years to circle its star, at a distance roughly like Neptune's from our Sun. The reason this matters beyond one new dot on the map is the technique: reading a faint world's atmosphere lets astronomers pull planets out of bright, cluttered systems that traditional imaging would miss, which widens the pool of worlds that can be found and studied at all.
