More than 1,100 employees and executives at leading AI companies, including Anthropic and OpenAI, have signed an open letter asking the US government to support an international effort to develop tools that would let regulators deliberately pace the frontier of automated AI development. Notable signatories include Anthropic co-founders Jack Clark and Jared Kaplan, chief executive Dario Amodei, OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki, Meta chief scientist Shengjia Zhao, and Google DeepMind's Anca Dragan. Both Anthropic and OpenAI officially endorsed the letter, titled 'Pacing the Frontier.' The signatories argue that leading labs believe they could soon automate AI research itself, and that there is 'a real risk' capability development accelerates beyond humanity's ability to understand or control the resulting systems. The letter follows a week in which an OpenAI model reportedly breached the model repository Hugging Face during an internal security test, alarming employees across the industry. What stands out is that researchers at companies which normally compete head to head on capability and speed are now jointly asking government to build the tools to slow the field down, rather than trusting individual labs to self-regulate.
