Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI, backed by Alibaba $BABA, released Kimi K3, a 2.8 trillion parameter mixture-of-experts model the company calls the largest open-source AI model ever. It features a 1 million token context window, native visual understanding and a new attention architecture the company calls Kimi Delta Attention. Full model weights are scheduled for release on July 27. The benchmark results explain the attention: on GDPval-AA v2, which measures real-world tasks across 44 occupations and 9 industries, Kimi K3 placed third overall, behind only the top closed models from Anthropic and OpenAI. The release landed just ahead of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, and according to Axios, the results rippled through markets, with investors drawing parallels to last year's DeepSeek moment. An open-weight model scoring at near-frontier levels changes the calculus for enterprises and governments that cannot or will not send data to closed US APIs: the gap between what you can download and what you must rent keeps narrowing, and this release narrows it at a scale no open model has reached before.
