A study published in the journal Radiology describes genicular artery embolization (GAE), a nonsurgical option for the more than 365 million adults worldwide living with knee osteoarthritis. An interventional radiologist threads a thin catheter to the knee and injects tiny resorbable microspheres that block the abnormal blood vessels feeding inflammation and pain. Researchers at the Charite hospital in Berlin treated nearly 200 patients who had already failed months of conservative care. Median pain dropped from 7 to 3 on a 0-10 scale over 12 months, 80% met the threshold for meaningful improvement, and no severe side effects were reported. The team positions it as an option between injections and joint replacement, and suggests it may even slow the disease.
