Meta AAI Labs Switchboard OpenRouter rival AI coding cost routing

Meta's $META AI incubator AAI Labs is building Switchboard, a tool that scores how hard a coding request is and routes easy ones to cheaper models, like OpenRouter's Auto Router. Meta may use it to cut its own AI costs or sell it to firms running coding agents at scale. Still ear

Meta Platforms' $META internal incubator for AI products and tools, AAI Labs, is developing a service called Switchboard, according to reporting from The Information. Switchboard scores the difficulty of an incoming user or AI agent request and decides which model should handle it, routing simple tasks to smaller, cheaper models rather than a top-tier one, a function similar to OpenRouter's existing Auto Router. A Meta team could use Switchboard to reduce the company's own internal AI compute costs, or Meta could make it available to organizations that run AI coding agents at scale and want to cut their model spending the same way. Meta has said the project remains at an early stage and may never be released as a standalone product. If it does ship, Switchboard would compete directly with independent routing services like OpenRouter, whose business model rests on charging companies for exactly this kind of cost-optimized model selection.
