Researchers analyzed more than 100 studies from around the world, published in the journal Carcinogenesis, drawing on human, animal, and laboratory evidence. Vape aerosols were found to carry carcinogens including formaldehyde and acrolein, along with traces of heavy metals. In people, the team observed biomarkers of harm in oral and respiratory tissue, including DNA damage, oxidative stress, and inflammation. In animal tests, exposed mice developed lung tumors at higher rates than control groups and showed bladder changes linked to cancer. The review challenges the idea that vaping is a harmless alternative to smoking, with the authors saying health risks may be emerging sooner than many expected.
