A shallow magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck 5 kilometers south of Taumarunui on New Zealand's North Island at 4:51am on Saturday, July 25, at a depth of 9 kilometers. The shaking was felt across Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Manawatu and Wellington. GeoNet's online reporting system recorded 22,942 felt reports within hours, including 27 reports of extreme shaking and 138 of severe shaking near the epicenter.
