A magnitude 4.4 earthquake hit the Campi Flegrei caldera west of Naples before dawn on May 21 2026, starting a 12-quake swarm in the Gulf of Pozzuoli. Italy's INGV measured the shock at 3 km depth, the strongest event in the current 2026 sequence. Schools shut across Bacoli, Pozzuoli, Quarto, Monte di Procida and the Bagnoli red zone; metro and rail lines suspended for inspections. Three million people live in the wider Naples area.
