One of the quieter signals of where US defense spending is heading came this week from Kratos Defense & Security Solutions (Nasdaq: KTOS), which said it has received approximately 400 million dollars in new funding from the Department of War tied to hypersonic and other national-security programs. The money began flowing in June and increased into July. What stands out is not just the amount but the strategy behind it. Kratos positions itself as the only company delivering both the propulsion and the flyer, the actual airframe that carries a payload at hypersonic speed. Its portfolio includes the low-cost Erinyes Hypersonic Flyer along with a family of solid rocket motors. The emphasis on low cost matters: much of the US hypersonic effort so far has centered on small numbers of expensive, exquisite systems. Funding aimed at cheaper, mass-producible designs suggests a shift toward being able to field these weapons in quantity, which is the kind of capability that changes the math in a large-scale conflict. Kratos was careful to note that not all of the 400 million dollars is hypersonic work; a portion covers undisclosed national-security programs it will not detail for security and competitive reasons.
