A major explosion tore through the KNDS Ammo Italy munitions plant near Colleferro, roughly 30 miles southeast of Rome, on Wednesday. KNDS is one of Europe's key suppliers of medium- and large-caliber ammunition, propellants, fuzes and warheads, including components that feed into Ukraine's wartime artillery supply. The blast occurred while firefighters and police were already on site responding to a fire that had broken out in the plant's gunpowder compression department, reportedly starting in a compactor machine used to compress gunpowder. The explosion was heard in neighboring towns. No injuries were reported. Colleferro's mayor noted that the outcome could have been far worse had the explosion happened outside the summer holiday period, when the plant would normally be fully staffed. The incident adds pressure to an already strained Western ammunition production base.
