JWST measures methane in atmosphere of temperate Saturn-sized exoplanet TOI-199b
Astronomers using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope detected methane on TOI-199b, a Saturn-sized planet 330 light-years away with a surface temperature near 175 degrees Fahrenheit. It is the first temperate gas giant whose atmosphere has been measured in detail.
NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has measured the atmosphere of TOI-199b, a Saturn-sized exoplanet 330 light-years away that orbits its star every 100 days. The surface temperature near 175 degrees Fahrenheit places it between hot Jupiters and the icy giants of our solar system. Detected methane, with possible traces of ammonia and carbon dioxide. A team led by Penn State and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory published the result in The Astronomical Journal.
