US military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain came under Iranian missile fire for a second consecutive day, hours after the United States struck dozens of targets inside Iran, according to PBS News and NPR. Missile alerts sounded Wednesday morning at Camp Arifjan and Ali Al Salem in Kuwait and at Juffair and Sheikh Isa in Bahrain. Juffair is home to the US Navy's 5th Fleet, the command responsible for naval operations across the Gulf. The latest round began after Iran struck three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, the channel that carried about a fifth of the world's traded oil and natural gas in peacetime. President Trump, speaking at the NATO summit in Turkey, said he considered the ceasefire with Iran to be over and called further negotiations a waste of time. The war between the two countries began on February 28, and the ceasefire both sides had been trying to turn into a lasting agreement is now under open strain. What separates this round from earlier exchanges is the target set. Strikes on shipping put commercial crews at risk; strikes on Arifjan, Ali Al Salem, Juffair and Sheikh Isa put US Army and Navy personnel directly inside the exchange. That is a different category of exposure for Washington than attacks on commercial shipping.
