HubSpot reverses default opt-in customer data sharing for AI Contact Discovery feature after backlash

HubSpot $HUBS customers forced a full retreat: a July 1 terms change had opted every account in by default to share CRM enrichment data for a planned AI prospecting feature. By July 5 the company said it made a mistake and pledged opt-in only. Per The Stack and MarTech.

HubSpot $HUBS spent four days learning how much enterprise customers care about who touches their CRM data. On July 1 the company changed its terms so that customer-stored business contact details, employer information and email deliverability signals would be shared across accounts by default, feeding Contact Discovery, an AI prospecting feature scheduled for August 4. Customers objected less to the feature than to the mechanics: every account was enrolled automatically unless someone manually opted out, which critics said treated data their teams had built as HubSpot's to redistribute. The backlash played out publicly, much of it on LinkedIn, and by July 5 the company had fully reversed course. HubSpot said it made a mistake, and chief product officer Duncan Lennox committed to opt-in only data changes going forward. The episode is a marker for the whole SaaS sector: pooled customer data is the raw material for AI features, but default opt-in is now the fastest way to convert a product launch into a trust incident that data-protection officers treat like a breach. Per The Stack, MarTech and CMSWire.
