Homemade explosive devices resembling standard commercial New Year's rockets were found at the Turnow-Preilack substation in Brandenburg, near the Jänschwalde lignite power plant, grid operator 50Hertz said - some devices had not yet been launched. Police recorded possible damage to a power line around 8am on Tuesday, September 1, and deployed bomb disposal specialists to the site; German outlet Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung reported the substation was hit more than once. Plant operator Leag said the incident caused a technical failure of one generating unit, Block B, and is investigating a link. Brandenburg's State Criminal Police Office took over the investigation; the motive and those responsible remain unknown. Brandenburg Minister-President Dietmar Woidke called it an 'attempted attack' and said quick action by emergency crews and staff prevented worse outcomes, with no injuries reported.
