German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced on September 1, 2026 that Russia was behind an explosive-laden drone that targeted a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle airport, a key hub for supplying Ukraine and supporting NATO airlift operations. The drone was found near the aircraft on August 4, 2026; it failed to detonate and was defused by a police bomb squad. Dobrindt said the drone's components and pattern matched other known Russian hybrid operations, based on police investigations, pattern analysis and intelligence findings. In response, Germany will close Russia's consulate general in Bonn by September 18 and shut the Russian House cultural center in Berlin, alongside further EU sanctions proposals and tighter entry screening for Russian citizens. Russian President Vladimir Putin denied the accusation, calling it a 'grave mistake' and saying the evidence was 'planted.' The Associated Press has tracked around 200 incidents of sabotage and other malign activity across Europe blamed on Russia by Western officials since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
