Chinese companies are now in the EU's sanctions crosshairs after the bloc said it had verified reports that China's military trained Russian troops who later fought in Ukraine. Speaking after chairing a meeting of the EU's 27 foreign ministers in Luxembourg, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the assessment had been confirmed by European intelligence services and described Beijing as a decisive enabler of the war. According to EU officials, the training took place at several locations inside China and involved several hundred Russian military personnel, some later deployed against Ukraine. Reuters had previously reported that around 200 Russian servicemen received covert training in China during 2025. German outlet Die Welt reported the instruction focused on drones and electronic countermeasures. China's foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian rejected the allegations, saying they had no factual basis and calling them slander. Ministers agreed to move ahead with sanctions on several Chinese entities, which have not yet been named. Source: Bloomberg, South China Morning Post, Hong Kong Free Press, Kyiv Post.
