Cognition rebuilds Windsurf into Devin Desktop, vendor-neutral hub for AI coding agents
Cognition has rebuilt its Windsurf editor into Devin Desktop, an IDE for managing AI coding agents from multiple vendors, the company announced. It supports the open Agent Client Protocol, with Codex, Claude Agent and OpenCode available alongside Devin at launch.
Cognition is repositioning itself as the neutral ground in the AI coding wars. The company announced that Windsurf, the editor it acquired in 2025, has been rebuilt and renamed Devin Desktop: an IDE designed around managing fleets of AI coding agents rather than just writing code. The new default view is an Agent Command Center where developers manage local and cloud agents, pull requests and shared context from one place. The notable design choice is openness. Devin Desktop supports the Agent Client Protocol, an open standard that lets any compatible agent run inside the platform, and at launch that includes OpenAI's Codex, Anthropic's Claude Agent and the open-source OpenCode, all running alongside Cognition's own Devin. Cognition also rewrote its local agent from scratch in Rust and says the new Devin Local is up to 30 percent more token efficient than its predecessor, with support for subagents. A feature called Spaces lets related agents share context so they can work on connected tasks. The launch positions Cognition as a platform that profits regardless of which model provider wins developer loyalty, a contrast with OpenAI and Anthropic, which each push their own coding tools.
