The scale of China's energy build-out in 2025 is hard to hold in your head, so here is a comparison that helps. In a single year, China added roughly as much new electricity generation as Germany produces in total, and almost all of it came from solar and wind rather than fossil fuels. Solar generation rose by about 336 terawatt-hours and wind by about 138 terawatt-hours, the latter a 14 percent jump from the year before. Behind those output numbers sits an even larger capacity story. China commissioned close to 370 gigawatts of solar and around 117 gigawatts of wind in 2025, figures well above what it installed the year before. For context, that single-year solar addition is larger than the entire installed solar capacity of most countries. Why this matters beyond China: it resets the baseline. Every projection about global emissions, every calculation about when fossil generation peaks, and every industrial strategy in Europe and the United States now has to be measured against a country adding a Germany-sized grid annually, built mostly from renewables. According to data compiled by Ember and the International Energy Agency, the question is no longer whether China leads on renewable deployment, but how far ahead it is pulling.
