US Central Command says it has carried out another wave of strikes against Iran, hitting coastal defense and cruise missile sites on Greater Tunb Island and targets around the port city of Bandar Abbas in an operation it described as lasting about 90 minutes. CENTCOM said the strikes were meant to degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway through which a large share of the world's seaborne oil moves. Additional strikes were reported near Khondab in central Iran and at Semnan airport in the north on Thursday, with residents describing explosions heard across the area. The strikes follow the collapse of an interim ceasefire on 8 July. Washington has said it intends to reinstate a naval blockade, while Tehran has warned of a forceful response. The stakes reach beyond the two governments. Shipping companies, insurers, and crews operating in and around Hormuz face a security picture that has shifted again, and any disruption to traffic through the strait tends to register quickly in global energy markets.
