CDC and FDA investigators have traced a multistate Cyclospora outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. As of the CDC's July 16 update, 1,644 people tied to those locations have gotten sick since mid-May, with 94 hospitalized and no deaths reported. Michigan health officials found that 90 percent of interviewed patients had eaten iceberg lettuce, which led FDA's traceback team to a single supplier in Mexico. Taco Bell has stopped sourcing lettuce from that supplier, and FDA has increased border screening. Nationally, the CDC is tracking more than 1,600 domestic cyclosporiasis cases since May 1, compared with just 249 over the same period last year.
