Typhoon Bavi made two landfalls in China's Zhejiang province late Saturday, striking Yuhuan around 11:20 p.m. local time and Yueqing, part of Wenzhou, around midnight. Nearly 2 million people had been evacuated beforehand, most of them in Zhejiang, a province that anchors a large share of China's manufacturing and technology output. Taiwan took the first hit as Bavi passed north of the island: the fire department counted 134 injuries, mostly people falling off motorbikes, slipping or being struck by objects, and no deaths. Miaoli county recorded nearly 80 centimeters of rain. In Yueqing, state broadcaster CCTV reported more than 1,300 downed trees, over 700 of them uprooted. Bavi has since weakened to a severe tropical storm, but it continues to push strong winds and heavy rain across eastern China, and the affected coastal belt includes some of the country's densest port and factory zones.
