AT&T throttles employee AI access as tokenminimizing spreads, cuts own AI costs 90 percent with small language models
AT&T $T staff are seeing AI access throttled as 'tokenminimizing' spreads through big firms, per The Information. After AI costs ballooned, companies are capping how many tokens employees can burn. AT&T separately cut its own AI bill up to 90% by switching to small models, Ventur
The era of unlimited AI access for office workers is ending, and AT&T $T is one of the first big employers to put hard limits on it. The Information reports that the telecom carrier has started throttling some employees' AI usage as a cost-control practice known as 'tokenminimizing' spreads across corporate America. After more than a year of aggressive adoption, the bills for running large AI models have climbed sharply, and finance teams at Fortune 500 firms are pushing back. Tokens are the units of text that AI models process, and they are also how usage gets billed. As employees lean on AI for more of their daily work, token consumption has exploded. Companies including Meta $META, Amazon $AMZN, Microsoft $MSFT and Uber $UBER have reportedly begun tracking how many tokens individual workers burn, and some are capping it. Critics argue these systems risk rewarding raw activity over real productivity. AT&T's own engineering response shows the other side of the problem. According to VentureBeat, the company processes around 8 billion tokens a day and found it was neither practical nor affordable to route everything through large reasoning models. Its data team rebuilt the internal Ask AT&T assistant around smaller, purpose-built language models coordinated by larger ones, cutting costs by up to 90 percent while improving speed. The tool has reached more than 100,000 employees. The shift signals a broader correction in enterprise AI: after a phase of spending freely to capture productivity gains, large companies are now engineering and rationing their way back to sustainable costs, and individual employees are starting to feel the squeeze.
