Apple $AAPL is doubling down on on-device AI at WWDC 2026 next month. AppleInsider reports the company plans to position its custom Apple silicon as a key competitive advantage. The strategy focuses on running AI models directly on iPhones, iPads and Macs rather than routing requests to cloud servers. Apple already runs a roughly 3 billion parameter on-device language model for most Apple Intelligence tasks and uses its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure for more complex requests. The pitch is privacy, latency and cost: processing AI on-device keeps user data on the hardware, avoids the wait for a server round trip, and removes the data center expense of running a model in the cloud.
