Anthropic is in early talks with Microsoft $MSFT to adopt the Maia 200 AI chip on Azure. No deal has been signed. Microsoft announced the Maia 200 in January. CEO Satya Nadella told investors on the April earnings call that the chip delivers over 30% improved tokens per dollar compared with the latest silicon in Microsoft's existing fleet. It has not been made generally available to Azure customers. A deal with Anthropic would be the first significant external customer for Microsoft's in-house AI silicon. Microsoft has trailed Amazon and Google when it comes to supplying enterprise customers with purpose-built AI chips. Microsoft invested $5 billion in Anthropic in November. As part of that relationship, Anthropic committed to spend $30 billion on Azure while continuing to use AWS and Google Cloud. In April, Anthropic also signed a 10-year, $100 billion-plus deal for AWS Trainium chips. Sources: CNBC, Bloomberg
