AMD $AMD used its Advancing AI 2026 conference to unveil a full AI hardware portfolio aimed directly at Nvidia's $NVDA dominance of the data center market. The centerpiece is Helios, AMD's first fully integrated rack-scale AI system, paired with new Instinct MI400-series GPUs, including the MI450X and a more powerful MI550X model, and sixth-generation EPYC 'Venice' server processors now ramping on TSMC's 2nm manufacturing process. Microsoft $MSFT has signed on as a Helios buyer, adding to a customer list that already includes OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have struck large compute deals with AMD this year. AMD's MI450 GPUs are scheduled to ship in volume later in 2026. The launch matters because the entire AI industry remains constrained by a shortage of Nvidia GPUs, and major AI labs and cloud providers have been actively seeking a credible second supplier to avoid depending on a single chipmaker for the hardware that underpins their models.
