Millions of people take GLP-1 drugs including Novo Nordisk's $NVO Ozempic and Wegovy, and Eli Lilly's $LLY Mounjaro and Zepbound, but clinical trials only track symptoms in a few thousand patients over months. A University of Pennsylvania team used AI language models to scan over 400,000 Reddit posts from nearly 70,000 users across more than five years, translating informal descriptions into standardized medical terms. About 44% of users described at least one side effect, and the most common ones, like nausea, matched what's already on the label. But nearly 4% of people who reported side effects also described menstrual changes, and others mentioned chills, hot flashes, and fatigue as the second most frequent complaint. Researchers point to the hypothalamus, the brain region these drugs act on that also regulates body temperature and reproductive hormones, as one possible link. The team stresses this does not prove the drugs caused these symptoms: Reddit users skew younger and more male than the general patient population, and posts are self-reported, not clinically measured.
