The physics are stark. A single modern AI server rack now draws 50 to 100 kW, compared with 5 to 10 kW for a traditional rack, and the IEA expects global data center power use to roughly double from 485 TWh in 2025 to about 950 TWh by 2030. Because connecting a new facility to the grid can take years, operators are increasingly putting generation right next to the building, so-called behind-the-meter power. The consequence reaches ordinary people. As data centers compete for limited electricity, households face the prospect of higher bills and tighter reliability, turning an abstract technology story into a kitchen-table one.
