30 rescued beluga whales relocated from closed Marineland Canada to US and Spain aquariums
All 30 beluga whales stranded at the shuttered Marineland Canada have now reached new homes, with four whales, Sierra, Acadia, Osiris and Lillooet, at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium and others at SeaWorld San Antonio, CBS News and CBC News report.
All 30 beluga whales that were stranded at the closed Marineland Canada in Niagara Falls, Ontario, have now been relocated to new aquariums. Marineland shut down in September 2024 following animal abuse allegations, and the whales' care had been funded by donations since. Four whales, Sierra, Acadia, Osiris and Lillooet, arrived at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, while two others, Bertie Botts and Frankie, were relocated to SeaWorld San Antonio in Texas. The remaining 24 whales are being sent to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, SeaWorld San Diego, and Oceanografic in Valencia, Spain, over the coming months. US regulators say the relocation ensures the whales receive medical treatment and care not otherwise available, and the animals traveled with aquatic medicine specialists, veterinarians and caretakers.
